Behind the artistic pseudonym of Black Sea Dahu lies a wonderful musical project conceived by the Swiss songwriter Janine Cathrein. The system of her compositions, rich in elaborate arrangements and high-level sound solutions, frame the vocality of Janine, endowed with an extremely flexible timbre in her articulated melodies. But behind her music there is much more.
Cosa significa Black Sea Dahu?
Black Sea è tratto dal testo della nostra canzone White Creatures. Il Dahu invece è una creatura mitica molto conosciuta in Francia, in Svizzera e nel nord d’Italia. È una sorta di capra con le zampe di lunghezze diverse per adattarsi alle pendici delle montagne, l’ho trovato esilarante! Il nome quindi è una combinazione tra una sincera profondità emotiva e quella spensieratezza tipica dell’idiozia, che guarda caso descrive più o meno due delle mie caratteristiche principali
Black Sea Dahu what does it mean?
Black Sea is taken from the lyrics of our song White Creatures. The Dahu is a mythical creature well known in France, Switzerland and the north of Italy. It’s a mountain goat-like animal with legs of different sides having differing lengths to fit the mountain’s side, hilarious! The name is a combination of genuine inner depths and the joy of silliness, which accidentally pretty much describes two of my main features.
Come e quando nasce il vostro gruppo?
Black Sea Dahu nasce nel 2011. Siamo un gruppo di familiari e amici, musicisti dal grande talento, al cui centro ci sono io, Janine. Sono io che scrivo tutte le canzoni e sono felice di essere circondata da grandi musicisti che mi aiutano a realizzare la mia visione musicale. Non siamo né una normale band indie folk né una band classica, siamo più che altro una via di mezzo tra un’orchestra e una band.
Tell us about yourself, how and when your group was born?
Black Sea Dahu started in 2011. We’re a gang of really talented musicians, family and good friends that gather around me, Janine. I am the one writing all those songs and I have great musicians around me who help me fulfill my sonic vision. We are not a normal Indie Folk band, not a classical band as such, we are something between an orchestra and a band.
Il vostro è un progetto polifonico. Che tipo di ricerca sonora stai perseguendo?
Mi siedo al pianoforte o con la chitarra in mano e suono ciò che ho in mente, in modo totalmente intuitivo e senza premeditazione. Ascolto quello che suono come fossi un animale, tanto che mi sembra di non suonare affatto. Più che altro provo ad ascoltare. Cerco rifugio, accoglienza, pace e bellezza. Cerco un’emozione travolgente insomma. Amo la dinamica nella musica! Penso che sia una cosa speciale saper suonare sia molto delicatamente che lasciarsi andare a sonorità più dirompenti.
Yours is a polyphonic project, what do you like about your sounds, what are you looking for with your music?
I sit down at my piano or with my guitar and either play what I hear in my mind or play totally intuitively and without a plan, that’s how my music comes into being. I listen to the music, the sounds, like an animal, mostly it feels like I’m not even playing at all. I try to listen. I am looking for shelter, acceptance, peace and beauty, for overwhelming emotion. I love dynamics in music! I think it’s a special power to be able to play very quietly as well as break out and be loud.
Quali correnti musicali ti ispirano?
La mia educazione classica ha molto a che fare con la mia musica di oggi: l’acustica, il fatto che la scrittura delle canzoni sia piuttosto complessa, la composizione stessa è molto più simile a quella di un’orchestra che a quella di una pop band. Ho ascoltato molta musica classica come Camille Saint-Saens, Bizet, Mozart, Tchaikovsky, ma ho anche imparato ad amare i Beatles, Adrianne Lenker, Ben Howard, la maggior parte delle canzoni del libro dei canti scout, Erykah Badu, Common… un sacco di hip hop ma anche una buona parte di indie folk e tanti cantautori.
What are the musical currents that inspire you?
My classical upbringing has a lot to do with what my music sounds like now. The acoustic-ness, the fact that the songwriting is rather complex, the orchestration more like an orchestra than a popband. I listened to a lot of classical music like Camille Saint-Saens, Bizet, Mozart, Tchaikovsky but also got to love the Beatles, Adrianne Lenker, Ben Howard, most of the songs in the scout singing book, Erykah Badu, Common…lots of Hip Hop but also a fair share of Indie Folk and Singer-Songwriter.
Nei tuoi video c’è una fortissima connessione con il paesaggio circostante, con la natura. Perché?
Sono attratta dalla natura, da un orizzonte più ampio. Per me è una fonte di pace e un luogo in cui riposare, in cui cercare accettazione, ispirazione e risposte. Sono cresciuta in un piccolo villaggio dove di notte si vedevano le stelle e non c’era il rumore del traffico, né turisti in giro. Ora vivo in città e questo ha senso per il lavoro con Black Sea Dahu, ma a volte mi sento intrappolata e preferirei sedermi in riva all’oceano o tornare a fare surf. Lo sogno da mesi ormai.
In your videos there is a strong relationship with the surrounding environment, and with nature, why?
I’m drawn to nature, to a wider horizon, it’s my source of peace and a place of rest, acceptance, inspiration and answers. I grew up in a small village where you could see the stars in the sky at night and there wasn’t much traffic noise, no tourists at all. Now I live in the city and it makes sense for touring and working with Black Sea Dahu, but I feel trapped sometimes and I’d rather sit by the ocean or go surfing again. I’ve been dreaming of that vividly at night for months…
Quali sono i tuoi progetti futuri? In che direzione sta andando la tua musica?
Il nostro nuovo album I Am My Mother uscirà il 25 febbraio e poi saremo in tour tutto l’anno. In autunno faremo uno spettacolo con la Babelsberger Filmorchester di cui sono estremamente entusiasta. Ho sempre voluto suonare le mie canzoni con un’orchestra!
What are your future projects, in which musical direction are you going?
Our new album I Am My Mother is coming out on February 25th and then we’re off on tour for the whole year. In autumn we play a show with the Babelsberger Filmorchester which I am most excited about! I always wanted to play my songs with an Orchestra!
La tua musica è piena d’immagini. Hai mai pensato di partecipare alla colonna sonora di un film?
In realtà se dovessi studiare qualcosa, mi dedicherei alla composizione musicale per i film! Lavorare con la Babelsberger Filmorchester è il mio primo passo verso questo sogno e spero che mi darà un po’ di esperienza e coraggio per seguire questa strada.
Your music is very enriched with images. Have you ever thought about participating in the soundtrack of a movie?
Actually if I’d ever study something it would be composing film music! Working with the Babelsberger Filmorchester is my first step towards this dream and hopefully that will give me some experience and courage to follow this path even further.
