Francesca Monte is an Italian singer-songwriter, born in 1987. Her talent is undeniable, her voice an acoustic wonder. In her youthful career she has already achieved many goals. She has collaborated with Buddy Miles, Jimmy Hendrix’s drummer, and in 2014 she participated in “The Voice of Italy” and “X Factor Italia”. Her tracks have reached more than 12 million streams. Francesca is a true “Alt Pop Icon”.
Com’è nata la passione per la musica?
Sono nata in una famiglia di musicisti, mio padre suonava il basso, un Hofner degli anni ’60, mio zio era maestro di pianoforte al conservatorio e mia zia cantante lirica. Trascorrevo pomeriggi ad ascoltare mia nonna Margherita cantare le canzoni napoletane del grande Roberto Murolo. A 14 anni poi ho iniziato a comporre i primi brani al pianoforte e da subito ho capito che avevo un dono speciale.
Where did the passion for music rise from?
I was born in a family of musicians; my father played the bass in a band, a 60’s Hofner, my uncle a piano teacher at the conservatory and my aunt an opera singer. I would spend afternoons listening to nonna Margherita singing the Neapolitan songs of the great Roberto Murolo. At 14 years old then, I started composing my first pieces at the piano and I soon understood that I had a special gift.
Con la tua musica hai viaggiato per il mondo. Quali sono state le emozioni più grandi?
Il viaggio più importante è stato negli Stati Uniti, a Dallas. Avevo solo 17 anni quando ho avuto l’onore di duettare con il grande Buddy Miles, batterista di Jimi Hendrix e cantante di Carlos Santana. Buddy mi ha mostrato il dono dell’umiltà, aiutandomi a credere in me stessa: penso che il talento sia come una piantina, va coltivato e annaffiato giorno per giorno. Con il suo sorriso smagliante e avvolgete Buddy mi disse: “You have a powerful voice like Christina Aguilera”, non lo dimenticherò mai.
Music has taken you all around the world. What have you picked up, and which have been the greatest experiences?
The most meaningful trip was in the United States, to Dallas. I was only 17 when I had the honour of singing two original duets with the great Buddy Miles, Jimi Hendrix’s drummer and vocalist with Carlos Santana. Buddy’s huge talent showed me the gift of humility, helping me to believe in myself. I think that talent is like a plant. It needs to be taken care of, and watered day by day. With his beaming, captivating smile, Buddy told me: “You have a powerful voice like Christina Aguilera.” That was unforgettable.
Hai raggiunto il successo molto presto, ha cambiato la tua vita?
Ho fatto tanta gavetta suonando in giro per il mondo. Mi sono esibita in Italia, in Europa, negli Emirati Arabi. Il grande successo è arrivato con la partecipazione a The Voice Of Italy e a X Factor Italia. Quel tipo di successo che si esaurisce in poco tempo se non hai i mezzi per continuare un percorso artistico che sia credibile e unico, lavorando con costanza e dedizione. Ho avuto e ho la fortuna di avere al mio fianco un team vincente. Da due anni collaboro con la label londinese Rotbaum Records e a oggi abbiamo totalizzato più di 15 milioni di ascolti in tutto il mondo, come artisti indipendenti. Il successo, se così si può chiamare, non mi ha cambiata, perché tutti i riconoscimenti che ho ricevuto sono frutto di anni di duro lavoro.
You’ve achieved success very early on. Has that changed your life, and in what way?
I have paid my dues busking around the world. I have performed in Italy, in Europe, in the United Arab Emirates. I achieved success with my participation in “The Voice of Italy” and in “X Factor Italia”. That type of success dwindles very quickly, unless you’ve got the means to keep up a novel and credible artistic career, consistently and with dedication. I’ve had the fortune of having a winning team. I’ve been collaborating with the London label “Rotbaum Records” and we have currently reached more than 15 million streams worldwide, as independent artists. Success, if you can call it such, hasn’t changed me, because all the recognition I’ve received is fruit of years of hard work.
Il tuo album Alièn si è trasformato in un cortometraggio: com’è stato avvicinarsi al cinema?
Alièn è un manifesto, una denuncia sociale, un sogno premonitore. Un bambino che è stato concepito in un tempo certo e partorito in un tempo incerto, durante la pandemia. Ho voluto fortemente che l’ep Alièn diventasse un cortometraggio per esprimere a 360 gradi tutte le mie personalità, le mie emozioni, le mie visioni. Prezioso è stato il contributo di designer emergenti di grande talento, italiani ed internazionali, e la collaborazione dell’Istituto Marangoni Londra: insieme hanno dato vita a creazioni uniche che ho indossato per il progetto. Girato tra l’Italia, valorizzando il territorio campano, e Londra, il corto è stato diretto dal regista Paolo Hanzo e presentato alla masterclass del Giffoni Experience.
Your album ‘Alièn’ has been turned into a short film. How was it to work closely with cinema?
Alièn is a manifesto, a social condemnation, a prophetic/ominous dream. A child who was conceived in a time of certainty and born in a time of uncertainty, during the Covid-19 pandemic. I strongly wished for the EP “Alièn” to become a short movie so as to wholly express all my personality traits, my emotions, my views. The invaluable contribution of young, talented designers, both foreign and Italian, together with the contribution of Marangoni Institute in London, they gave rise to unique ideas that I took up in the project. Shot in Italy, making the most of the land of Campagna, and London, the short film was directed by Paolo Hanzo and presented at the masterclass of the Giffoni Experience.
Ci sono film che hanno ispirato la tua musica o la tua vita?
Musica e cinema sono un connubio perfetto. Sono sempre stata attenta in particolare alle colonne sonore dei film; i miei compositori preferiti sono il maestro Ennio Morricone con Il pianista sull’oceano e C’era una volta il West, Alexandre Desplat in Twilight e Harry Potter, Hans Zimmer in L’ultimo samurai e Inception. Adoro Carlo Verdone, un genio con mille sfaccettature. I film che mi hanno segnata sono vari: Titanic, Il grande Gatsby, La vera storia di David Gale, Eyes Wide Shut di Stanley Kubrick, immenso.
Are there any films which have inspired your music or your life?
Music and Cinema are a perfect combination. I have always paid particular attention to movie soundtracks. My favourite composers: Maestro Ennio Morricone “The Legend of 1900”, “Once Upon a Time in the West”, Alexandre Desplat “Twilight”, “Harry Potter”, Hans Zimmer “The Last Samurai”, “Inception”. I love the actor and director Carlo Verdone, a multi-faceted genius. The films which left a mark in me are varied: “Titanic”, “The Great Gatsby”, “The Life of David Gale”, Stanley Kubrick’s “Eyes Wide Shut”, massive.
